The importance of turning observations into innovations

We just love reading Todd Schnick’s blogs and his podcast is great. As anthropologists, here is a post that we thought was just up our alley—and yours as well. I fly almost every week and actually never had the “a-ha” moment Todd writes about. But how profound an observation he had. And, he turned it into something we all should remember.

As you know, at SAMC that's a major part of our approach and what we work on with clients: turning observations into insights which lead to innovations.

We are sharing a world that is full of personal choices

We protect those choices. But, we cannot live alone, as Todd points out so eloquently. What should we share and what do we go alone? Great questions to ask yourself and to share in your organizations and at home. Here is Todd's essay. Please enjoy.

Here we go again. There's a school shooting, then a lot of tears and hand-wringing, then nothing happens.

But wait, maybe, just maybe, this time is different.

I'm of course referring to the recent mass shooting in Parkland, FL that killed 17 people, including 14 students, a geography teacher, an assistant football coach and the school's athletic director. In response, three major U.S. retailersWalmart (one of America's largest firearm retailers)Dick's Sporting Goods and Kroger—have "voluntarily restricted gun sales to make a policy statement and manage their image with consumers," reports The Los Angeles Times.

According to the article, these retailers "are responding to the national uproar that followed the shooting...especially the feverish debate on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. They are not waiting for legislative action to improve matters."

So are these retailers really anti-guns or are they trying to look good to their customers?

Both.

Have you ever gotten an email which says something like, “We are the best at SEO…first page guaranteed”? Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? But I have learned that it is perhaps not as good as it appears.

Why do I say that?

Let’s start with the buyer’s journey and why firms that only deal in SEO ranking can only get you part of the way to achieving your goals. Getting to the first page of Google is not all that inbound marketing is about! Helping a buyer through their decision process so they can make the right choice among many options is really a bigger objective -- and one that needs you to think about more than just SEO. Search marketing is more than just the right content on the website.

SEO is critically important -- agree, but...

All that social media buzz! Does it really work? And which outlet might work best for you?

We were curious too. To see how social media worked for one of our B2B clients, Simon Associates Management Associates (SAMC) just completed a case study which we turned into a white paper on the impact of social marketing on the growth of website traffic.

While only one study and one case, the white paper does point out the power of using a wide range of social channels and why the right ones for your message should be an important part of your inbound marketing mix.
