Many don’t go to doctors for screenings or pay attention to diet and exercise. In general, they also don’t like doctors, don’t take their medications and are more reluctant to give up unhealthy habits like smoking. Given this situation, it’s no surprise that a whopping 40% of men have high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, cancer or diabetes—or often a combination of several ailments. However, there are signs that this trend is slowly changing, which was the focus of the most recent Healthcare Innovation: Trends From The Trenches webinar, which aired May 9, 2014.

“Men’s Health: An Emerging Market for Healthcare Providers and A Response To A Growing Crisis,” co-hosted by Andrea Simon, Ph.D., and Charles Modlin, MD, MBA, FACS, examined how healthcare systems should open their eyes and recognize the enormous and often overlooked market that needs to be addressed, and soon: men’s health. Those organizations that offer services to entice often-reluctant men to embrace wellness and prevention will prosper the most, both in terms of the quality of specialized care offered and revenue realized.

The May 9th webinar was the seventh in the popular series developed by Dr. Simon, anthropologist, former hospital executive and CEO/Founder of Simon Associates Management Consultants. Dr. Simon’s co-presenter, Charles Modlin—a widely recognized expert and innovator in men’s health—is a Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Urologist, Founder and Director of the Minority Men’s Health Center at the Cleveland Clinic‘s Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, and Executive Director of Minority Health at Cleveland Clinic.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Modlin join our webinar series, as no one is more involved in highlighting men’s health issues and offering effective, creative solutions, such as the Cleveland Clinic’s annual Men’s Health Fair and many other outreach programs,” Simon stated before the webinar aired. “He’s seen some wonderful results over the past 12 years, including a significant improvement in outcomes for men in his programs.”

“Despite many discouraging statistics about men’s health, there’s a lot that healthcare institutions can do to help turn the tide for men,” Modlin added. “I gave plenty of examples during the webinar of what I’ve been able to do to attract and retain new male patients, and help them turn their health situations—and often their lives—around in very positive ways. Healthcare administrators and physicians don’t need to start from scratch; I offered them many options for solutions which they can take back to their own systems.”

As well as discussing reforms instituted by the Affordable Care Act, Dr. Simon and Dr. Modlin gave actionable advice for ways healthcare organizations can upgrade their services and become more competitive to retain patients, attract new ones and enhance their revenue streams.

Additional webinars are scheduled for Fall 2014 and Winter 2015, focusing on highly-impactful trends developing in the healthcare industry that bear watching, observed by front-line professionals in the field. For more information, please click here.
