In July I had a wonderful conversation with Kevin Craine for his podcast "Everyday MBA," discussing my book, “On The Brink: A Fresh Lens to Take Your Business To New Heights” and the role corporate anthropology can play in boosting a company's success. An internationally respected business technology analyst, Kevin interviews business authors, innovative thought leaders and top-shelf executives, sharing their advice with his listeners.

We talked about how the brain hates to see things with fresh eyes and yet, as things are changing so quickly today, business leaders really need the ability to "see" the possibilities that are right there in front of them. This is where corporate anthropology and observational research come in. You can't change a culture until you understand it, and you can't understand it until you observe it. As an anthropologist, this is my expertise and Kevin asked me really good questions!

Are You "On the Brink"? Could a Little Corporate Anthropology Help?

How did a bold, curious leader use innovative business ideas to turn Laclede Chain Manufacturing around?

In my new book, On the Brink: A Fresh Lens to Take Your Business to New Heights,” I tell a story about a client, Laclede Chain, that was “on the brink.” Stuck or stalled, however you might like to call it, the company had grown and captured market share but then had reached the point where leadership had to rethink the company's business model.

Similarly, with today's market growing but slowly, we at Simon Associates Management Consultants (SAMC) are getting calls from across North America from companies like Laclede Chain that are also facing that “stall point.” They rebounded well from the 2008 Great Recession — although they aren’t quite sure why — and now they are watching as sales slow, client companies get acquired or merged into other companies, and buying processes change. They, once again, have to reinvent their businesses. And once again, they aren’t quite sure how.

Are You On the Brink to See Opportunities Right Before You?

Are you on the brink of finding fantastic new ways to grow your business? Or, are you stalled and trying to figure out how to get going again? Maybe there are acres of diamonds just waiting for you?

All those Acres of Diamonds await you!

There’s a great story famously told by Russell Herman Conwell, an American Baptist minister and founder of Temple University. It is an ancient Persian tale of a wealthy but dissatisfied farmer who sells his farm and travels the world to look for a diamond mine. After years of searching, the farmer’s quest ends fruitlessly, and he tragically dies in poverty. Meanwhile, the man who buys the farmer’s land one day finds a shiny black rock in one of the streams that runs through the property. As it turns out, that shiny black rock is a diamond!

Thrilled with his discovery, the new owner starts scouring his land and soon finds that the farm is literally littered with acres of diamonds. There, on the farm one man sold in order to finance his world-wide search for a diamond mine is one of the most lucrative diamond mines on earth, with its jewels now decorating the crowns of monarchs. The moral of the story, of course, is that sometimes what we are looking for is right there under our nose if only we knew how to look
for it.

You can find a copy at Barnes & Noble, on Amazon, at airport/train stations in Hudson News and in so many of the book stores you like to support. 

How do you write a book? I'll tell you!

I have found it so interesting to answer endless questions such as: "How did you do it?" which is inevitably followed by: "Could I do it too?"

That's why this seemed like a great time to share with you some of the lessons I have learned writing this book, finding a great publisher, hiring a publicist and getting this book to market. For years, I opened my CEO workshops by asking participants this question:

“Are you an innovative leader helping your company remain competitive in a fast-changing business environment?” Invariably, every hand would go up. But when I asked them to share some examples of successful innovations or product improvements they’d introduced, they were stumped.

Eventually, I realized that executives want to be perceived as innovators, but, in reality, they don’t understand how to be innovators. Consequently, their performance often falls far short of their management ideals. I don’t fault these leaders—–their hearts and intentions are in the right place—–but when it comes to making innovation happen, they typically flounder.
